asked on

moving from /16 network to /24 network

Hi Experts,

I have a network that has /16 subnet and most of the hardware like printers are given IP from vlan 1. I want to switch the network to /24 and the IP address of the devices will remain the same.

Will the devices on the network still work if the subnet on them remain /16? I will slowly change them to /24 with the time.

Please let me know.

Hi,
sure they will, if they are in the same octet, i.e. 10.0.0.x 255.255.0.0 will still talk to 10.0.0.x 255.255.255.0

hope this helps
max
There is one exception: 10.0.0.255/16 will not work anymore, as that is an invalid IP (it is the broadcast address not assignable to any device).

OK thanks that will. I don't think I have *.*.*.255 IP on any of the devices. The only thing I will do is just change the default gateway.

Thank you.
