PS6000 Equallogic Firmware Upgrade
We have an older PS6000 Equallogic that is no longer supported by Dell. We have replacement drives in the unit which gives us a message stating: "One or more of these drives is not approved"
It has been running like this for the past 5 years no issues.

We are currently on Firmware version 5.1.2
We are looking to progressively step thru all the firmware updates until we get to version 8.1.3

however, we read where several of the forums state that after an upgrade to higher versions of firmware they received this error message: “An unauthorized drive has been detected and disabled” which removed all non-approved drives from the array.

My two questions are:
1 - Has anyone had a successful upgrade on an Equallogic with "unapproved drives" and not had the system remove them?
OR ----
2- Is it possible to "approve" the drives  ?

Thank you Joshua, you have been very helpful.  We found out the drives do indeed have some sort of special dell firmware on them, and the only way to get verified drives is to buy them from Dell (under contract)….

Storage devices include any device used for storing and retrieving digital information. Hard disk drives (HDDs) use one or more rigid ("hard") rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not only sequentially. The primary competing technology for secondary storage is flash memory in the form of solid-state drives (SSDs), but HDDs remain the dominant medium for secondary storage due to advantages in price per bit and per-device recording capacity. CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable) is a digital optical disc storage format that allows information to be stored outside the mechanical HDD.
