external mac drive has locked permissions, unable to repair, need the data

I have a Seagate 2TB external drive that my MacBookPro (El Capitan) recognizes but has frozen permissions that now won’t allow me to read/write. This also means I can’t copy or move the data manually off the drive. I have some data that isn’t backed up (reliably) anywhere else and need to copy it off. I tried changing permissions via the command line (chmod, chown) and attempted a diskutil verify and repair command but no success.

error code:
The volume Seagate Backup Plus Drive could not be verified completely
File system check exit code is 8
Error: -69845: File system verify or repair failed
Underlying error: 8: POSIX reports: Exec format error

Time Machine won’t make a backup since it isn’t my main drive and won’t recognize it. I need a reliable third party tool that will successfully repair the disk and keep the data. I’m currently using TechTool Pro (quick scan) to check the disk.

I’ve exhausted most of my options minus other 3rd party tools. Please help. Thanks.

Thanks. I'll try that.
Disk Warrior is $100 and would likely repair or allow recovery of the data. Alsoft makes Disk Warrior.
Data Rescue by Prosoft would likely recover the data, you can download, run, and recover 1 file for testing before buying.

Thanks. I successfully completed the clone (Data Rescue) to a new, larger external drive. I then finished a ‘quick scan’ and it has the cloned files ready for recovery. During the ‘quick scan’ process, it required an additional external drive (which I happened to have) to store temporary files ( a 320GB drive with plenty of space).

Right now my laptop has only two USB ports. One is for a USB hub and the new USB drive (with the cloned volume). I will need to get a new external drive to copy the files to and I’m hoping it will work with the USB hub. If not, I will need to disconnect the 320 GB drive. This may be an issue because Data Rescue doesn’t indicate if that drive is needed anymore. It did mention it needs it temporarily during the quick scan but nothing mentioned past that session. I'll have to determine how much space I can free up on my main (SSD) drive.

Any other advice?

@strung: The USB hub is powered. Thanks.

@strung:

Thanks. Data Rescue cloned the original volume from the corrupt drive, it did show me the slow reads on the cloned data but was still able to recover all of it!
