asked on

169.x.x.x address from switch

I have a switch that is handing out 169.x.x.x. addresses.  When I console into the switch, the config looks correct and I am able to ping out from the switch.  How do I resolve this?

What's the second octet?
Post config?
The simple answer would be to disable DHCP on the switch. How do you know the switch is passing out IP addresses? That is a little odd for a switch......

I know that devices get there IPs from the DHCP server, however, when I plug a device directly into a port on the switch, I get:

169.254.22.208

Is the switch no communicating with the DHCP server?

Here is the config:

spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst
spanning-tree portfast default
spanning-tree extend system-id
spanning-tree pathcost method long

I don't see DHCP config on the switch.
169.254.x.x is given out by MS Windows when a client can't communicate with DHCP server for w/e reason.

Do you have any idea where or what your DHCP server is? As a rule it should be the server if you have a server. Your switch has nothing to do with it. The computer gets (should get) its IP address from the DHCP Server.

Do you have a server? If so what OS?
Avatar of Qlemo
The DHCP server needs to be in the same VLAN, or the switch configured with an IP Helper to forward DHCP requests to and from other VLANs.

Issue was with misconfigured vlans on the core switch.
So https:#a41634243 is correct, no?

After further troubleshooting, that is what worked.
Hi Gubbio,

Qlemo was correct in pointing that this was an issue with the DHCP configuration.
We would be glad to know how you fixed the issue.

We are segmenting our network by network closet and a vlan was configured incorrectly on the core switch (wrong closet).
