Windows 7 updates not working - Rest Permissions on Windows 7

Hello Fellow EE peers.

In a nutshell I have a client that has a peer network running Windows 7.  Two of workstations that are running Windows 7. One is Windows Professional and one is Home Premium.

A while back they were infected with Malware.  That has since been cleaned up and there are no more issues with Spyware or Malware.

It does not do automatic updates and manual updates end up with the error message of "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer".

Things of NOTE:

  1. I've used the Microsoft Fix-It tool as well as exporting the registry entry for updates and merging them to no avail.
  2. Services have been set to manual to force it to run, but the error continues.
  3. Services have been set to Automatic but the error continues
  4. Both workstations are running SP1. When attempting to uninstall SP1 I get an error that I don't have permissions, even though I'm an admin on their workstations (Verified as I was using our local admin account)
  5. Work was also attempted to all of the above with safe mode.
  6. Upgrading to Windows 10 is not an option nor is reloading of the workstations.

In reading some articles it appears that the permissions on the drive were compromised and need to be reset. However, I've been unable to find KB that is associated with this.

I need to find either a pre-written script that will resolve this or a How To.

Hi Rafael,

As per my past experience what I know, you should try the manual process to fix it.

  • Start with Control Panel >> click on Windows Update >> Change setting
  • Click on down-arrow pull-down in Important updates >> Click Never check for updates >> OK
  • Close Control Panel window.
  • Now Reboot your system.

Again
  • Go to Control Panel >> click on Windows Update >> click Change setting
  • Under Important updates, click on down-arrow pull-down >> Now make the selection that you need for automatic updates.
  • Press OK >> Once again close the Control Panel Window.
  • Visit your fresh Windows updates.

Please let me know if you would like further assistance.

Best Regards
