Windows 10/Chrome - Turn off 'Always Open Files of this Type'

Hi,

I'm not sure if this issue is Win10 or Chrome.

When I export a Word doc from Confluence, an icon appears at the lower left of my screen. I can click on this icon to open the file. (Same is true for PDF). One of the options is to always open files of this type. I ended up enabling it for both Word docs and PDFs.

Now, however, I need to disable this functionality so I can take a screenshot. Can I do it in Win10 or Chrome?

Thanks,
Steve

Dumb question, you do not want to be prompted to save the file or just being asked to always save this file type?
I'm lost here. If, when you double click on a file to open it, it it asks you what you want to open it with it means it doesn't know what the file is. In the case of the Word Document I am going to guess it does not have a .doc extension. Not sure what you mean't by (same as PDF).

So what did you enable for both Word and PDF files?

Right now you need to understand what extensions are. Extensions are the file name starting with the "." so if the file name is Test.doc the extension is .doc That signifies that it is a Word file. If the file name were test.pdf the extension would be .pdf and that means it is a Adobe Acrobat file.

You Tell Windows what program to open a file with based on the file's extension. So... what were the extensions of the files in question on your desktop?

All,
Ok, maybe I wasn't clear.

1. I fully understand what extensions are.  (I've been in IT for 25+ years. :) )

2. The Word document was either DOC or DOCX.

3. By "Same as PDF", I meant that, formerly, when I downloaded a PDF, I'd need to click on the icon that comes up on the downloads bar on the bottom of the screen.

4. What did I enable? When I clicked (right-clicked) on the icon representing the file, A drop-down menu would appear. One of the choices was (I forget the wording) was to auto-open files of this type. In other words, for a Word Doc, immediately invoke Word to view the doc, without my having to click on the icon. For PDFs, immediately invoke Adobe, without my having to click on the icon.

5. I want to turn offthat option for Word docs so that I need to manually click the file's icon to open the file.

Thanks,
Steve
Sorry Stephen but your explanation made it sound like you were a novice and to be honest I am still a little confused about what you are doing. Are you simply download a file with Internet Explorer? Is this what you are trying to do:

or if you are using Chrome:

Yes, disable auto-downloading per your link. So, it sounds like it's a registry setting then?
Thanks.
Sorry Lockdown, did not see that till I pressed submit.
No problem Edward. Stephen it is a setting in either browser. The links will show you or follow Edward's comment.
@Edward,
I found the setting in Chrome!

Clear auto-opening settings

Unfortunately, it worked too well: I hoped it would allow me to disable this functionality only for Word docs. But, I'll accept your solution. It's no big deal to re-enable for other file types I encounter. :)

Thanks!
There is also a Windows setting in Control Panel:

Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs
Thanks, everyone!

@Edward - your solution was fine for my needs.
@Lockdown - Sorry for no points. I did not need to try your solution, and, unfortunately, don't have the time to try it as I'm on a deadline. I appreciate the help, though. :)
Hi Rob,
Sorry, but I closed the question just before I received your response. Thanks for your suggestion.
Yep. It is on or off. No settings for individual file types.
