After dropping index, load taking a long time.

I created an index on a tbl w/ 3.5 million rows.  It was taking forever so I dropped the index.  Now it's taking twice as long for the insert before I created and dropped the index.  Any suggestions?

What type of index, clustered or nonclustered?  If nonclus, did the table already have a clus index?

It was a non clustered index I created and dropped.  The tbl already had a clustered index that is still there.

I mis spoke before. It was a non clustered index.  The tbl already had a clustered index that is still there.
How big is the table (size in GB)?
Are you performing a simple INSERT command or you're performing a massive insert?
