HP Officejet Pro X451dn unable to set manual IP settings
I have (or had!) a networked HP Officejet Pro X451 that lost its IP settings. Currently, it is set to auto, but it never receives an IP. This particular model, I can set the IP manually, following mfg instructions, but it doesn't keep the settings. I've tried restoring network defaults and I've even tried resetting factory defaults. FYI, I also tried to Printer's Utility via Printer Properties to no avail.
I've tried using ARP command to set up (arp -s XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX MAC ADDRESS). I get no errors, but I cannot ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX.
However, if I connect via USB, I have no problem.
I am sure that if I can access the web interface, I may be able to set the IP manually. But I can't since there is no IP! Does anyone know of a way to access the printer's embedded web interface via the USB connection?

They have two firmware updates for that printer. Update to the latest and greatest and see if that fixes the issue: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5276613&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4057

Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him well.
Sorry, but when running the firmware executable, it does not detect the printer. All I get is a blank page. I waited several minutes to no avail.
Is there any way to flash the firmware via usb? There is a usb port on the back of the printer. My guess its for photos.

Yes. If you connect the printer via USB to a workstation you should be able to flash it via USB. I did not know your exact OS and it might make a difference for the firmware. Make sure you download the right one for your OS.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit and downloaded correct file: OJPX451DN_CN1548AR
Just tried again with no success.

I miss-interpreted your question about the USB. You mean update it via a flash drive? No signs that you could. There weren't a lot of instruction or troubleshooting on the firmware update. Here is what little there was:

Were you able to access it via internet explorer when you manually set the IP?

No, you are correct. The printer is now connected via USB from my laptop. Running the update does not locate the printer, so that's a bummer.
Because I am unable to set (and keep) an IP using the printer console, I cannot get to the printer via IP. (I guess if I was able to accomplish this, we wouldn't be having this conversation?).
Anyway, there is a USB port on the back of the printer. That was my followup question regarding flashing the printer via that connection, but I don't think that's an option.

It cracks me up that one of the issues "supposedly" corrected is the very issue that I am having.

I was hoping the IP would stay until you powered it down. Guess not :) It sounds like the network card got fried. You have done the obvious and swapped network cables between the laptop and printer to make sure your network cable is good and you are receiving an IP from it? If that is the case that I agree with your "poor yorick" :)

Yes, tried different usb cables, tried different ethernet cables, tried plugging printer ethernet directly to switch in computer room as opposed to little 8-port switch that I connect to.
I even tried connecting ethernet directly to my laptop ethernet port so only connection would be between my laptop and the printer. but if the printer is reading 0.0.0.0, what could i set my ip to?

Don't know if any one is familiar with Linkin Park's "In The End"
"I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn't even matter.
I had to fall to lose it all. but in the end, it doesn't even matter."
Kind of how I feel.
Kudos to all for your assistance, but I think I'm stuck with a really big, USB-connected only printer.

Try a network reset. Press Setup on the printer's Control Panel, then select Network > Restore Network Defaults.

Thank you, hdhondt.
That was one of the first things that I tried. I tried Restore Network Defaults and also tried Restore Defaults.
No change.

Involved days of troubleshooting and a few calls to HP, who eventually gave up, but I didn't.

Attached final pic display no link on the printer display.
Is it possible that the network jack is hosed? Printer is not even 2 years old.
