Samsung Galaxy S4 dead??

Hi there.

This is the case:
My Dad got my Samsung Galaxy S4 about 1.5 years ago... so it's about 3 years old. A week ago it suddenly acted up. I wasn't there, but I was told, that it went on and off... showed some DOS-like stuff on the screen, and then all dead and wouldn't charge.
I'm here now and can conclude this: The charger cable was damaged. Partly broken, so I suspect some short circuit of the phone. Does that sound plausible? My Dad just taped up the cable, but it was almost broken in two.
I can furthermore conclude, that it won't charge at all with the original battery or an extra Anker battery. I use one of my Samsung chargers...
I just digged out a spare battery (extended Anker battery that I know should work... though may not be charged) from my storage room, and that won't charge either. When I placed the battery in the phone, it just shows the "Samsung Galaxy S4 bla bla" welcome message on the screen. After that nothing else. No charging... nothing.
So is there any other way to conclude, that the phone is dead? I don't want to spend money on repair, since it's 3 years old... but I can't believe if a former top model is dead by itself.
Is there any way to reinstall the phone when it can't turn on?
I still hope to revive it. :-)

Best regards

Ulrich

Do you have the battery kit so that you can charge by pulling the battery out if the phone to charge it via the battery kit?

Thanks for your responses. I tried with alternative charger and battery. No difference. I guess we must conclude that it's dead...

Yes. I think power through the damaged cable did it in.

My opinion is different. It is better to buy a cheap ext charger like the one above as "When I placed the battery in the phone, it just shows the "Samsung Galaxy S4 bla bla" welcome message on the screen.".
I was a little wrong about the welcome on the phone. It's just the very first picture saying Samsung and the model number white on black. The "real" welcome with colors and so on doesn't show up... I suspect that the ROM is damaged.
I can also be the charging usb port is damaged.

If the phone is dead, there will be nothing displayed when you power on it.
With the usb cable and working power adapter attached, press the keys below to test.

Volume up + Power + Home button
I just tried that... the turned-off-battery-charge picture came for a second, but then again dead...

Hello Jackie.

I tried your suggestions. The last one (home+volume down  and power) made the warning show up. But before I can do anything else, the screen turns black again. I managed to repeat that a few times, but now nothing at all....
It seems to me that the battery does not have enough charge to start your phone.

My advice is to get the battery out of the phone to charge it according to my previous comments.
@ Jackie Man
Try not to repeat others suggestions...

"Charge the battery in a friends phone to rule out your charger as the problem.
If a fully charged battery does not work in your phone then the phone is dead and thus not worth fixing."
@ Michael

The author only said "tried with alternative charger and battery" and not reply you that he has tried your suggestion.

It could be just using another charger and battery to charge the same phone.
Thank you all for your responses. I concluded that the phone is dead. A new phone has been bought. :-)
