repair install of Windows 10 stuck on Looking for Updates
A client experienced an unintentional upgrade to Windows 10, and it was obviously a botched upgrade as Cortana/Search is broken and other disturbing anomalies that didn't exist in the previous OS, 8.1.
While attempting a repair install using the Media Creation Tool, and choosing to upgrade from there keeping files and apps, it is hanging on Checking for Updates for over 4 hours now.
Is this broken and needs to start again, or can this be acceptable?

You should simply uncheck "check for upgrades". It is known to take forever and amount to noting.

Hi All
Thanks for your input.
It was determined that the system was in bad shape prior to the upgrade, and that's likely why the upgrade botched.
We backed up the user data and re-imaged it from scratch.
Thanks again.

After receiving the suggestion, I discussed my prognosis and the suggestions. At that time, they decided it was beteer to cut an run. If they had elected to follow the idea (and a good one at that), it would have been done.
Thanks much for your ideas, though.

One option is to reboot to a Win 10 DVD and use the option to roll it back to Win 8.1. Once back there, try the upgrade again.
