What laptop, what screen, what OS and drivers?

The screen may send incorrect data to the laptop resulting in a wrong signal.
I have very seldom seen a TV that doesn't work. Make sure everything is turned on and connected. The TV should be turned on first. Then turn on the laptop. The TV has to be on first so that the computer will recognize that it has a second "monitor" attached.

Then you in to your graphics software and set the "monitors" up for dual monitor operation...

Need to check what kind of display modes ate supported.

The mostly used modes ate mirror or clone and the requirement is that you have to set the same resolution of your external display for your notebook screen resolution.

toshiba z10t tablet
Can you reinstall the video driver on the tablet?
I would try seeing where you are at with the other suggestions first. See how many monitors the computer recognizes with Radhakrishnan's suggestion "Right click on the desktop and select screen resolution"

It would help to know the OS so we can guide you a little more accurately but if the tablet doesn't recognize two monitors we need to try a plan B. Until the tablet recognizes two monitors there is no point continuing.
