Video player

I need a special video player. Perhaps is better to say frame by frame video analysis software.

I know that Windows Media Player and  VLC player can play frame by frame, but is not want I am looking for.
It has to be easy to work, frame by frame, played forward and backward , frame capture, annotation or even measurements on the picture.
Surprisingly many sports video analysis software almost do the job. I tried Lognmatch trial, but is not good enough.
Then I found few other programs as follows:
- MovieShop Framer  (http://www.fame-ring.com/cut.html )– trial version. That seems the best in terms of use, providing the frame, frame capture and annotation.
- Free PhysMo (http://physmo.sourceforge.net/ )that can even measure on pictures.
- ETS-Explorer-3M (http://apps.usd.edu/coglab/schieber/eyetracking/ets/ets-VBprogram.html )
ETS-Explorer-3M I never tried to see how is it working because is too old and I do not have some .ocx control or other library on my new Win7.
PhysMo I tried and the measurement feature is nice, but cannot open any video format I want and that means I have to convert I then I may lose frames. My format is 1080 mp4 file and PhysMo knows avi, mpg. Besides that there is one more problem: is OK with short videos, but with long videos high resolution is deadly, because what it does is ripping off the video in frames from beginning and save them on a folder. You have to provide a folder and all the frames will be saved there. For a 20min video in HD is a lot of space.
MovieShop Framer  is nice to work with, but is not free and cannot do measurements.

What other free (or paid) programs do you know to do the frame by frame video analysis?

ASKER

I know them and I work from time to time with them, Core Video Studio does the same job as these 2.
But is not what I need.
They cannot measure on picture and they also do not offer a simple interface as a video player with frame by frame extraction.
viki2000 as you want free have you looked at open source here's one you can test and free open source
PhysMo is an open-source (free!) video motion analysis program, primarily designed as a learning tool for teachers and students of high school physics. PhysMo interactively demonstrates the fundamental principles of motion.
May or may not be what you need

Merete,
If you look in the body of my initial question, you may see that I already tried PhysMo and I mentioned what disadvantages has.

It would be nice a free version, an alternative to MovieShop Framer.
Then I would extract the frames that I need as pictures in one folder.
And then I would use another software for measurements. For example Sketchup does a nice job, bit are also some (free) programs used for microscopy, especial in medicine.

Hi Merete,
ffmpeg is ugly to work with.
I have tested your recommended Gom Player. In fact I tested also another one: http://www.quintic.com/software/player/

I am not an easy to satisfy person :(

I watched also at some video analysis software:
http://www.carpet-project.net/en/catalogue/detail/video-frame-analyzer/
https://www.archives.gov/social-media/github.html

I just write them here, so I do not lose the links :)

Coming back at the video player.
Indeed you can save the frame, even with a keyboard shortcut.
But I realize is something that is missing and I do not like it.
Why do I like MovieShop Framer? What is so nice and easy about it?

Well, I just realize that I need a video player that has a slider to move easy through the video at the frame rate. So beside the main slider indication of the video progress, MovieShop Framer has a second slider for fine tuning/see at frame level the video. And is nice that you can see some frames under the video before you decide which one to capture.
In fact the capture is not a big deal. We can do it with a print screen in the end, if that offers enough resolution, quality for the picture.
The main thing is to slide easy and frame by frame, and see those frames before you save the desired  frame.
I do not like to use click right and click left for next or previous frame. I need to jump faster and at frame level, but not only clicking infinite times to a button.
That's why Gom is not good enough. If have to click on Time Jump or use the keyboard shortcuts.
Would be nice a slider and to see the frames before and after the current frame, at least some of them as in a filmstrip.

Corel Video Studio can show Filmstrip at trimming and cut one frame, easy to play forward and backwards, but is not so easy to work with.
Then I forgot about another one, included in Windows, which I never used: MovieMaker. Has a slide, goes one frame back or forward from keyboard keys and makes a snapshot.

If we cannot find another player/software, then I must stay with that one, but I am not really satisfied.

I use Win7 64bits and Win 8.1 bits.
I know the videohelp.com website, I use it too.

Regarding the measurements on the picture/frame, the best free software that I found seems:
ImageJ - http://imagej.net/Welcome
Fiji (based on ImageJ) - http://fiji.sc/ , http://imagej.net/Fiji/Downloads
Gwyddion - http://gwyddion.net/
I think for the moment I stay with GOM player, even if it is not as good as MovieShop Framer.
ImageJ looks interesting viki2000, I didnt know you also required image analyses.
thankyou glad to have helped a little.
