Booting SharePoint Servers

We have the following servers:
SharePoint 2013  2008 R2
#1 Web App
#2 Web App
# 3 Web App

#1Web FE
#2 Web FE
Office Web App Server.

We do windows update everything month. I was always told to shut down the servers in the order listed above. The Windows updates are installed by the server admin. I reboot each SharePoint server. I shut down the server and wait till it comes back up to reboot the next server. Just recently App#2 took hours to come back up, holding up progress. So what I'm wondering is this the correct process that I'm doing or could I go ahead and shut down App03, WF1 and WF2, then go back and work on app#2?  I know the office web server is unique and a powershell script has to be run.

Thanks in advance.

Are you using a load balancer or any kind of appliance that directs request when a server goes down?

Yes, we are using a load balancer. It doesn't seem to be working correctly though. If one server goes down it should direct traffic to the other server is my understanding. Well if WFE01 goes down you get the horrible  "application error message", instead of directing traffic to WFE 02.

Thanks so much for the info. I don't know much about load balancing (we have other staff for that). I know the load balancing is working while systems are up. What I'm not certain about is down time. On a very rare occasion we have to reboot WFE01 during business hours, because it throws an application error. If I' on WFE01 and the system goes down, I would think I could do a refresh and get connected to WFE02.

Thanks again. I appreciate the help. I'm glad I joined experts- exchange, because I have a lot of questions from time to time :-)
Glad that helped.. yes, is load balancing is working when you do a refresh if one server is down you should be directed to the other server.

Good luck!
