Windows backup stops with error (problem with shadow copy event id 521 and 9). PLease help me out of this...
Hi,
i have a big problem with server backup on a server 2012R2. We have 2 partitions and backups should be stored on a usb-drive.
When i start backup (all partitions, system state and bare metal) after some seconds the system says, that the backup didn´t work.
In event log there is an error under application:
ID 521, Backup.
In event log there is an error under Microsoft-Windows-Backup:
ID 9, Backup
The text of both errors is the same:
While creating the shadow copy with volume shadow copy service the following error occured: 0x8007049A
I have already done:
- looking for sharepoint services on this server -> not installed
- Creating a shadow copy of each partition manually -> no problem
- deactivate and reactivate shadow copy for each partition and delete all shadow copies -> didn´t help
- Delete Backup job and recreate it -> didn´t help
- reduce the backup to only one partition (tried with both) and nothing else -> didn´t help
- check vssadmin list writers -> all stable and no error
- Store the backup on a shared folder (NAS)-> Same problem
I don´t have any idea....
Please help - thanks

Make sure you C: drive is marked as active. To do this, go to Control Panel , then Administrative Tools, then into Computer Management. In Computer management, go to Storage, then click on disk management to display your list of hard disks. You can then set your C: drive to be active by right clicking on it and selecting Mark Partition as active.

I did check this. And c: isn´t marked as active. But switching it to active didn´t help to get backup running. Or have i to restart. I am afraid that the server isn´t starting with setting c as active. I remotly manage this server and always at night. So if i restart it and it doesn´t come back, next morning all users aren´t able to work...

The advise to not do it came to late for me. We set drive c to active and the server didn´t came back. IT was a little tricky to start from dvd adn get a prompt to reset the other partition active. But we did it and the server started again. After some more checks we know, that is a hardware issue. Drive or controller have a problem. THis weekend we are going to virtualize (p2v) the server on new hardware. Thanks.
