Remote desktop problem over VPN
Windows 10 Pro PC's.
RDP over VPN was working until a user changed the account from a local account to a microsoft account.
Now when they try to connect it says "The credentials that were used to connect to 10.0.0.8 did not work".
Both PC's are in a workgroup.
I've created a new local account with the same name as the old one.
Local account names and passwords on both PC's are the same.
I've tried switching off the firewall.
Any suggestions please?

Take a look in the Credentials Manager and delete any passwords you see for the old RDP

John: I tried that and it still didn't work.
LockDown: I checked the Credentials Manager. There were no entries.
I have relsoved this temporarily by creating a port forward on the router and coming in via the internet instead of the VPN.

You have a problem then. I was not sure about Credential Manager, but I am not surprised. You did click on Windows Credentials, yes? (Default tab is Web Credentials)
Try these two Windows Repairs:
System File Checker:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW.
Allow to complete, restart or, preferably, shut down the computer and then start up again.
Test to see if the problem has been corrected.
DISM:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
Restart the computer and test.
If these do not work, try a Windows 10 Repair.

Click on Windows 10 Upgrade, allow drivers to upgrade and then click on Keep Data and Keep Applications.

Yes, I did click on Windows Credentials.
I doubt the problem is the OS. I can RDP to other PC's but I will try your suggestions. Thanks.

It does sound like it is connecting doesn't it? You aren't saving the credentials in the RDP Client are you? Before connecting click on Show Options and make sure "Allow me to save credentials" is not checked.

I am entering the credentials manually. Credentials have not been saved.
If it works via port forwarding but not via VPN something had to have happened and changed on the VPN side, Have you tried cycling power to both routers and re-establishing the VPN?

I tried that. The VPN is still working for other services such as VOIP.

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately I couldn't track down the problem. I don't have the time to investigate further and my work around of coming in via the internet instead of the VPN is working so I will leave it at that.
Thanks for the update.
