VPN connection from Windows 2008 Server
Say, we've set up a VPN connection using the built-in network connections tab.
When we connect to the VPN, we connecting fine and have full communication between the remote network & server but, the server which has a fixed, public IP address loses connection to the Internet.
What setting do I need to change in order to ensure that we retain connection to the Internet?

Does the remote network also have a fixed (Static) IP address? Is it on a different subnet?
I don't think there is a setting that would affect the internet on the host. It would have to affect the IP settings directly. You are connecting from a computer to the server right? What kind if internet connection do you have?
I am thinking that the internet is so slow that the VPN could be taking up enough of the available bandwidth that the internet on the server isn't working. Try doing some diags at the server. Ping something by IP address, hit refresh on the browse several times. See if it isn't actually working. Just very slowly.

Hi Good day,
Hope you have changed your Local/public IP after installing VPN, Uninstall the VPN then reinstall this will re register the new IPs and works perfect ,

Hi remote network has a fixed ip on a different subnet.
Its a hosted server that has the fixed public ip and on a high speed internet connection.
Haven't changed local/public IP

Maybe get someone on the remote end to see why the connection is being dropped. Maybe use Wire Shark as a start.
You will need someone at the server while you are connected via VPN to do some diags.

Can checking the setting "Use default gateway on remote Network" in VPN connection Tab under Networking IPV4 Advanced, have something to do with it?
It could. That is why I was asking the direction. If you are going from a remote to a server then the remote would go out the internet connection on the remote network. That would really slow things down. But it would slow things down on the remote.
If you are firing up the VPN from the server and going to the remote it would probably stop internet on the server but you said you weren't going that direction right?

VPN fired up from remote - the remote has no access to the internet.....
You need stable Internet access at the remote end for the local end to make a solid connection
Do you mean when you play with that option?
ASKER
The option was checked by default - I assume if unchecked will use the server I'm connecting from to access internet....

It was presented as site-to-site which I use all the time. (I use Client to Gateway as well).
So you (shaunwingin) need to be clear about the method of connection and also about the stability of internet at the remote end.

Please. I have been assuming Client to Server and have never heard anything to the contrary.

I need to test - but I think this setting is the issue. tx
