Question on copying virtual machines and making new VM with them

We have a tech that said it is not possible create a VM from a copy or duplicating and making act as one because they some sort of virtualization SAS also IAS.  We are not too knowledgeable on virtualization, but what exactly does this person means?

Does that means under this type of VM structure of SAS also IAS they cannot copy VM and set them as separate VM. (similar like Hyper-V that you copy the ".vhdx" somewhere else and create a new VM over it).

I have no idea, what your "Tech" is referring to, a virtual machine is just a file, it can be copied, many times, and used as a VM,

e.g. many clones can be made

with the appropriate steps, like cloning any OS, changing the IP Address, MAC Address, Hostname it can be used as a new VM, in Windows OS, you would also use Sysprep as recommended by Microsoft.

Understood; exactly what we understand!

And we have copied  ".vhdx" and created new VM to test stuff!

Question,

What do you think the tech when saying "he uses uses SAS also IAS"?  Is that a type of virtual server? o other technology?

We web the terms and found for SAS servers:

And for IAS server:

With this info we see nothing related to virtualization; the reason we turn to EE to get a better understanding,
I have no idea what your "Tech" is referring to!

I think you need to ask him to clarify.

It certainly IS POSSIBLE to clone or duplicate VMs and use them!

Understood and we will do (and yes we understand that it is possible to clone or duplicate VM; we have done it in our Hyper-V environment)

But can you clarify our findings above in that SAS and IAS has no relations to virtualization or VMs (as the links implies)?

Or if those terms SAS & IAS are related to VMs, how are they related?

(Note: the "tech" is not "ours".  He is working on a related project.  Since he said that is impossible for him to copy and create a VM where he works on because "they use SAS and IAS", we just want to make sure that those terms throwned at use has no relarions to virtualization)

the only link is SAS and IAS could be services which are hosted on virtual servers.

What he might be refering to, is some servers e.g. a SAS server or IAS server could break if it was cloned for use.

But normally, you would create a golden master template without ANY applications or service, and the clone, deploy, and then add your application stack, e.g. SAS or IAS

Oh, ok!  We think we got it.  You mean that when he told us that he process our request of creating a new VM based on a current VM (that is, duplicating it), since his servers are SAS server and IAS server, that process would damage it?

Is it correct what we understand?
Yes.

You would duplicate virtual servers, which are basic, e.g. Windows OS with all updates.

and then add your applications after.

The process we understand, we just make sure that by what the tech responded to our request, it's what you told us:

...since the techs servers are SAS and IAS servers, then if he proceed with our request of duplicating it or cloning it, then his servers can be damage; this the reason on the first place he could clone it?

We just want to know if we understand correctly your observation.

Understood.

The tech will not be in until next week, but your comments have been very helpful!

Thanx!
