slow performance on windows 2008 r2 sp1 server

out of the blue-server has bad lag/delay when running.  shut down and startup take much longer, even just opening programs take 2-3 times longer than before.  has hyper-v with 2 clients running 2008 r2 as well and they are lagging even more than host.  have a client program that is installed on network workstations and the data is on server...program run like 5 times slower.  hard drives seem to be constantly accessing between lights and clicking sounds during the laggy parts.  hard drives are new and test ok.  event viewer doesnt have anything of importance that seems to relate to problem. scanned for viruses and malware and came up clean.  no updates or changes to server the day it started with this lag.  not sure where to go with this one

Do you have enough memory to keep the system from swapping?
Enough cores for the load?
Over time all systems start to slow down as the hacked in security fixes seem to take a toll...
Or maybe Microsoft is doing it on purpose to push new OS sales...

How old is the server?  More than 2 years, shut it down and reseat all cards... netcards... drive controllers, memory.... Anything in a slot that can be removed and reseated.... reseat drive cables.... Oxidation can happen, especially if you have any humidity or dust...

thanks so much for replies guys, though have to say after much research and basically no changes server just out of the blue started working perfectly again yesterday.  it just went to hell for several days and is now fine.

error logs show nothing of significance.  raid software showing everything was fine.  check everything with a fine-tooth comb as far as hardware and making sure nothing came loose or was physically deteriorating due to oxidation or some effect.  virus scans showed nothing.  eliminated network and still was sluggish.

then all the sudden at some point yesterday it just starting working again, i wasnt even there working on it, just got a call saying everything was running great again.  went check and no changes happened, it just remedied the situation itself.

the solution is from scott's first 4 words "it's hard to tell"....hate when its a gray area like this and there is no de facto answer to what happened.
Something did happen, and there is a chance it will happen again.... But at least for now all you can do is worry, since it might be near impossible to figure it out now that it stopped...
