Adobe Reader XI Updates without DC
I have to maintain Adobe Reader Xi installs for program compatibility reasons.
I want to assure there are updates (are there any?) without installing DC.
What might you recommend?

What is the "normal route"?
Normal = Open Adobe and use the menu to update .

I wouldn't call that the "normal route" exactly ...... Normally I don't want to require manual actions if at all possible. So what should I advise?
Adobe has an automatic update. Let it sit and sooner or later it will say an update is ready. Let that happen and check the system tray to see what it is going to do.

I'm sorry that I wasn't clearer about this.
I want to have automatic updates.
I need to have this method deployed to many users.
Users can't be relied on to make choices.
Can it be done or not?
No guesses please.

I can't help you. I gave you the methods we use at clients. I do not know why the systems you manage are so vastly more difficult to manage than the ones I do. Sorry I cannot do more.
ASKER
John: Probably because your client users are infinitely more capable and reliable.
Thanks for the effort.

This is the download page for Adobe Reader 11.

I have no idea what you will be offered if you try to "upgrade" this. Adobe Reader DC is version 15.

jcimarron: Yes, I can download and install it.
The issues are:
1) I'd like to keep it updated
2) I'd like to assure it won't "update" to DC.
How?

Re 1)
That would mean you would have to check for updates manually from time to time. (I wonder if Adobe will be updating Reader XI any more??)

Manual updates was something I suggested earlier and I tried this on a virtual machine and Adobe stayed at the same major version.

OK. So I take it that no responder knows for sure what will happen if there are automatic updates set for XI.
It's possible that XI will be upgraded to DC but not that's not known.
So, to prevent that possiblility - go to manual updates.
Good question re: "will XI have any more updates?" One might suppose it would for security purposes. But, yes, at some point they will stop.
So, manual updates is the only suggestion - thus obviating automatic updates.
Thank you all for the suggestions.

I cannot replicate your situation.
I have a Vista machine with Reader V9, a Windows 7 machine with Acrobat (not reader) V11, and a Windows 7 machine with Reader DC.
The first two machines do not try to upgrade major versions when I update. The third machine, I had Reader V11 running fine and deliberately upgraded to Reader DC (downloaded it and installed it).
I have no cases of Reader installing the next major version by itself.

Anyone else with different experience?
I kind of hate to accept "I've not seen it" as proof but that may be all there is.

I went to my retired Windows 7 machine, uninstalled Adobe Reader DC and restarted it.
I installed a non-current version of Adobe Reader V11 (11.0.09). On installation I set it to notify before downloading or installing updates. This can be set in preferences.
I then clicked on Update and it updated to V11.0.17 which is current for V11.
It made no effort to update to DC.

Thanks folks.
John: I'm a bit leery if "it made no effort" because that's an historical observation and not necessarily of future behavior. Windows 10 is a great example!!
I hope we're getting closer...

John: It appears that a government agency site is giving trouble if we use DC. That's why the issue. It's part of production operations. My assignment, should I choose to take it, is to assure XI is going to be available without complication.
Your experience asking for an update from XI and getting "none" is encouraging...

That said, Reader is free and Adobe Reader DC works fine as well.
