You have to make sure, you have increased the size of the LUN presented to ESXi host first, and then select Properties of the datastore, and follow the wizard to increase, and then select the LUN with the space you need to increase into.

what is the lun and how do I do that? I am using local storage and for some reason my colleague setup the storage space to be less than the max capacity. he only gave it 1/4 of the available space and now of course we are starting to run out of space.
a LUN is a common term used for shared storage iSCSI or Fibre channel, but can also be the size of your local array, RAID array?

Okay, so when you click Properties of the datastore, and click Increase, follow the wizard, do you see any space you can increase into ?

do you know what size local datastore you have ?

what size array (LUN) or RAID has been created, you may have to increase the size, outside of ESXi, e.g. at the BIOS/Storage POST screen
i had already followed the instructions by diverseit (a41680321). when i clicked on increase there was 5 TB I could add and i did so. the size of the local datastore was 1TB. and now it shows as 6 TB. it is a raid5.

How do i determine if everything succeeded or is by the fact that it is showing 6 TB enough?
So if the datastore now shows 6TB, you've successfully expanded the datastore.
