windows explorer takes a long time to display all the files in a folder
This happens to me on loads of folders, when there's lots of files / folders in it. I'm waiting now for a foler that has 1300 filess and 10 folders in it. On the address bar, it's got a thermometer going across it. It's not showing all the files till that thermometer finishes.
Other folders - with 2000+ items, it doesn't do that.
Any thought on why it takes that long to display contents of some folders?
it's a windows 7 machine but feel I've seen this on other machines / likely other OSs

Thumbnails are great, but it has to build a database file (thumbs.db) in each folder and then it has to update that file every time you open the folder to see if anything changed. That is why it gets to be extremely slow if you have a large number of files.
large number of files >>in a single folder <<< right? Spread files into different folders and you get some speed back back, but at the expense of more time to find the right folder the file is in ? : )
Right. Each folder gets its own database file, so the more files in that particular folder (plus the icon for its subfolders) then the larger that database file and the slower it becomes.

Can't reproduce the issue now - that folder is quick now (I was thinking it was just building the list of files, but yeah, building the thumbnails makes more sense). But it is a details view in this case / just shows icons. So now that it built the thumbnails, and I go back into that folder, it has the info...
The always use icons box is not checked. I do like thumbnails. Guess I can't have it all!? : )
