Data backup
Hi there,
I am looking for a solution to backup our main file servers (60Tb). Do you guys recommend any solution that you have had real hands on experience?
There are a few solution out there (Symantec, Veritas, etc). I am trying to find which one handles large data storage.
Thanks,

Hi tailoreddigital
In our case is 60Tb in one single server. We also user SyncBack Pro but I don't think it manages backups very well when the data is too large. It takes way too long to back it up. Syncback is a good solution for small business., which is not our case anymore

Storagecraft's Shadowprotect is the best utility for this. The first backup of your 60TB will naturally take very long, but once that is done it'll do incremental backups which after some time can be consolidated into the full backup. You can set it up so that an incremental is done every 10 minutes, so it will only take minimal time after that.
A further advantage is that you can boot the backed up server as a VirtualBox VM, which means you can keep on running with all the data accessible even if your server should break down, so you have practically no unproductive time while you are repairing your server or waiting for replacements. You can also easily test your backups that way. You can also backup to an offsite location with ShadowProtect.

You can go for Veritas Netbackup. Netbackup offers data streamlines so you can divide your 60TB in chunks and take the backup to tape or disks as per your need. It will definitely take lesser time. If you are using NAS then the NDMP backup use DAR technology and in that case the restore will be really fast.

At 60TB you'll ideally want to look for something that does deduplication to bring backup sizes down and speed up backup timeframes. Commvault or Arcserve are good products that work well in this area, though are usually quite expensive when compared to other products (suppose it depends on budget, where the data is to be stored, etc).
I'd take a look at Armada Cloud - they provide an onsite appliance that dedupes and compresses data, then syncs to the cloud. They also provide "seed" drives to ship back for the initial backup - you certainly don't want to push 60TB over your WAN, even if you have fat pipes.

Syncback is pretty flexible and dependable. I also backup multiple websites with it and other systems on my LAN.
I've used Syncback for 8 or 9 years now and have no complaints. It's a solid piece of software.
