System Center Configuration Manager deployment & licensing

People,

I need some clarification about the System Center Configuration Manager vNext or the latest version.

Does it includes the SQL Server by itself ? or if not the SQL Express edition (2014)  can be used to run the SCCM database in the same server as the SCCM server.

I have just been told by my colleague and manager that I can deploy SCCM to manage Workstation only not the server as part of the Office 365.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

You need the full edition for the site server.

You can use express for any secondary sites you may want to run, but for the primary site server you'll need the full version: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt589592.aspx

SCCM will manage whichever endpoints you point to - if you point to just workstations thats fine, it will just be able to manage the workstation in an environment. It really depends what you mean by manage, if you mean the updates, there is an article here that describes that process and how WSUS and SCCM are involved

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt628083.aspx

Hope that helps,

Ok,
So if that's the case, shall I install the SQL server in the same server as the SCCM server as well or do I need to separate it ?

Unless you are expecting a very heavy load, with many many workstations being managed by the primary site server I would aim to try keeping SQL on the same box.

Just make sure you give it enough RAM and other hardware resources.

As for licensing it's always best to speak to Microsoft for the definitive answer, but with SCCM 2012 for instance, it comes with a standard edition licence for SQL (but I believe it has to be on the same server as SCCM site server).

Take a look here:

Thanks Guys.

After confirming with the VL team via email vlserva@microsoft.com my Office 365 E3 license does somehow include SCCM 2012 Standard Edition.

Which can only be used to managethe desktop only not the server.

Very strange but this is the good news :-)
Well, the wonders of licensing eh? Good news indeed :).
Yeah.

I think that you can manage to finish the task as there are well documented articles in MS Technet to guide you.
Thanks !
