strange occurence with windows
i built my computer several years ago... really nice system with lots of ram and a 256 gig SSD
i chose a 256 gig SSD because SSD was still expensive and i didn't see a real need for so much hard drive space.
eventually i decided i needed some more storage space, so I added a 1 TB SATA drive to the computer for extra storage.
somewhere along the lines, my system partition found its way from the SSD to the SATA HD. mysteriously!!!
i know i wouldn't have purposely done it myself because that was my goal -- to have boot up go through the SSD drive so I had a quicker boot
so, getting to my question... i've decided to upgrade again ...
I'm trying to image my C: drive (the 256 GB SSD) to a 500 GB SSD
i've tried macrium reflect and EaseUS todo backup.
but, when I plug in the new 500 GB SSD into the place where the 256 was before, it fails
some things to take into consideration
the system partition is on Disk 1 (mysteriously copied over) , the boot partition is on Disk 2 .... and should have been imaged onto the new 500Gig
thanks for any ideas

post a screenshot of disk ùmanager, showing the disk drives
If it is truly as you describe then the first thing you need to do is clone the boot partition from drive 2 to the new SSD and mark it as active. Then clone the System partition from Drive 1 to the new SSD.

Did you understand my suggestion or do you need help with it?
when working with disks - i start by connecting only the disks needed
so - disconenct your 1 TB drive, and connect only the source and destination drives i f
you want to do a drive copy, try paragon disk manager(free) :
https://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/
personally, i use paragon software for imaging (then you need the 1 TB as intermediate storage) http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/download.html

mcknife, i understood, thank you ...

mcknife, what i understand is if i create a new install of windows on the new SSD i'll have the system partition created on the new SSD and won't have to make use of the boot up sequence on the SATA drive ? correct?
the problem i see is with all the imaging tools i've used ( macrium reflect, and easeus todo backup) i cannot select what i want to clone ... it's all or nothing ... not partition specific, the whole drive or nothing ...
can you recommend an imaging/cloning utility which i can select pick and choose the partitions i want to put on a drive?
also, if i can select (copy/paste) partitions, can't I select the previously used system partition, and then edit it with bcdboot or bcdedit?
thanks

>> i cannot select what i want to clone ... it's all or nothing . << that is normal for CLONING - to clone you get an exact copy of the disk
with imaging - you can select partitions as you like

Install windows clean onto your new drive
