You have another problem, even worse .. these disks were on a Vax, so unless you have a VMS machine then you won't be able to mount the filesystem.

OpenVMS is long past it's support. NO you will not be able to read it from a windows PC.

Your only hope is nemonix.com   - they bought OpenVMS from HP, and as far as I know, the only people left who could do this.

Be prepared for $$$

Hi---the drive was connected  to an nt4.0 workstation so it's in ntfs format.    When I plug it back in, I can see the data, but because the PC is extremely old, USB is not an option, neither is ide, also cannot connect another drive to the computer as the drive would have to be under a gig. (Mobo restrictions). Network card doesn't work----figured I'd look for a cheap adapter.

You could also get a more modern machine, load a hypervisor on it, then run WinNT as a virtual machine. Then you won't have to worry about obsolete hardware.

Thanks for the comments and the tips---
Some of the complexity and unknowns are the reason I'm looking for a cheap SCSI to USB adapters---but they seem quite expensive for trial and error.  Hence, the post to see if I can get some help in picking one out that isn't so expensive and one that will work given the drive model.
No such thing as a cheap SCSI to USB adapter.  The SCSI you need is 50 pin parallel, USB is a 2-wire serial.  Voltages and clocking are dramatically different.  Signal speed is different. That's like asking for a USB to HDMI.
Question is two years old.  Responses given were appropriate and should solve the problem.  Points divided among contributors.
