Wifi Dropping

Any free software out there that would show signal strength and any drops from the wifi in a home? Have a friend that says his drops or gets really slow multiple times a day for about 30-60 seconds and then will go back to normal. Just seeing if there is a way of seeing if it's the wireless router or modem?

Thanks, I'll look at that. I guess the cable mode and router are all one piece of equipment so that rules out a separate wireless router as the issue.
There's nothing stopping you from still using your own separate wireless router if you want. It just takes a moment to setup. You basically set it up as a 2nd network within the existing network and everything just connects to that. What's actually going on at the router level is completely transparent to any device accessing the network. Just saying that this is an option if you discover that the WiFi signal on your cable modem is dropping out.
A separate wireless router can interfere with your wireless AP/router.  It's wireless, so uses radio waves.  There's no connectivity needed between two wireless systems needed for them to interfere with eachother.

If you want to add an AP to your network and disable the one built in to your router that's a different thing entirely, but you first need to know what's causing your wireless connection to drop.
I think they used to have a separate wireless router until the ISP upgraded their modem to the built-in wifi. I told him to try the Xirrus inspector to see if that shows anything. It could always be something with the modem itself but this is a good starting point.

Thanks for the suggestions.
