2012 MS fileover Cluster

Dear Experts

Could you please correct me here.

I have a 5 node MS file cluster running on Vmware with 2012 Guest OS.

I have added all my disks to VMs and initilized, format them etc. Validatiation report was successfuly...

I have then added File role within the Failover Cluster Manager console on node1 and I called " Client Access name" Fileserver1 and assigned IP. It then picked up the Disks in the cluster ( two RDM disks  presented to node1)  and I selected them and then gave a shared name etc and all went fine. Fom a client machine, When do "\\fileserver1\sharedfoldername"  I can succesfully see the shares.

Question,- I need to do the same process to add new file shares to the cluster using other nodes as each node has RDM disk and there will be shares from each disks.  when I followed the same steps I followed  on node2, it does not see RDM disks on node2?   I can see that disk is reserved so how do go and create shares on rest of the nodes please?

regards

Once you have created the file share (through the Failover Cluster Manager) in one of the nodes of the cluster, you don't need create the same file share on the other nodes, the Failover Cluster will manage the failover of the file share to another nodes when needed.

Hi Richardson,

in my setup, I have different volumes in each node and each volume has different shares. on my first cluster node, it can only see two disks. Whereas it should also see the other disks that I added to the cluster. So,  I noticed that other disks lost its settings for some reasons in the cluster and looks like this now.

previous attachment is only one sampe from secons node. Disk is in reserved mode as it is added to cluster and now I need to assign it a drive letter and format it again? How can I do that please while it is in use? This is a new setup so no data is in the disk. Otherwise I have to unmount it from VM and add it as RDM disk again but then  would that  break my cluster or causes any issues?

Ok, I have destroyed the Cluster, removed the disks from VMs and started from begining.

I added the disks to VMs as RDMs and all disks are in its previous stated. ( screenshot attached)

When I borught the disk online, it remembers Volume name and drive letter I assigned to it previously.

However, when I tried to bring the disks online in the cluster manager ( in Disks) information I had was "Failed to bring the resource Cluster DIsk 3"   and I have other disks in the same situation. does it mean I need to delete the actual RDM disk in the SAN and re-create them as they were formatted in the previous  attempt?

thanks

this is the errors from the cluster log ( CreateCluster.mht) for 4 offline disks.

" the Resource cluster disk3 is not being  considered for the disk witness because the resource is not valid as a disk witness."

Just for infromation, I have cofnigured Quorum settings with its default option from " Configure Cluster Quorum Settings"

I am not seing any resolution for this? Could you please point me to right direction. thanks

I destroyed the Cluster, Removed RDM disks from VMs, as LUNs were formatted I created new LUNs and assigned it to VMs.

Can you please let me know when I should change the drive letters? by deafult, Server picks up the next one on the list.
Hi Kuzum,

What is the actual configuration of your VMware environment, I know you have VMware 5.5, what update version is it? It should be at least Update 1. What kind of storage are you using? Fiber, iSCSI, ... ?

When connecting your RDM disks, every Disk has to be added to every VM in the cluster. So every individual server in the cluster will show every single disk in the cluster. From what I can tell of your setup from reading, you've got 4 RDM disks, with two added directly to each node. This is an invalid Cluster configuration because each system must have the ability to access every disk in the cluster.

this is exactly What I was missing and did not know about it.  I added each disk to each VM from settings in Vcenter and problem is resolved. thanks
