Unable to open Chrome on MAC - SingletonLock: Permission Denied
Hi,
I have just downloaded and tried to install Chrome on a new Macbook Pro, however when I click on the icon, it doesn't open up at all. Drilling down into what's happening I see the error of:
Stuarts-MBP:~ stuartscott$ /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/ Google\ Chrome ; exit;
crashpad_handler: --database is required
Try 'crashpad_handler --help' for more information.

Thanks for your comments, however I have tried downloading a new copy several times and I have followed the installations instructions as per described but I still have the same issues.
Any other thoughts?

It sounds like you might have user profile issue
On OSX if you look in the following folder (its in the Library folder inside your users home folder)
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
The default profile is in a folder called "Default" in the above listed folder is where the profile is stored. If multiple profiles are setup there will be other folders called Profile1, Profile2 etc.
If you've nothing of importance setup in Chrome then simply delete the entire Chrome folder in the ~/Library/Application Support/Google/ folder and restart Chrome and a clean one will be re-created.
Alternatively if you RENAME the Default folder to something else like "backupDefault' and then open Chrome it will create a new clean Default profile

I wasn't able to access the Google folder as it's only accessible by root, could this be the problem? If so, how do I get around that?

There's no way that folder should be locked by root.
The ~ at the start of the URL I provided indicates that the files are INSIDE your user home folder
In the Finder .. at the top of the screen select Go and then Go to Folder
Copy and paste the precise URL into the box and press GO
Report back before we start going through the options

Hi,
Ok, that worked! The only folder I have under Chrome is a folder called 'NativeMessagingHosts' which relates to Skype. I do not see any profile folders?

OK .. looks like there is something wrong with your Library folders
It is very unusual for files/folders inside your user home folder to be unwriteable by you!!
We can address the specific issue of the Chrome folder by setting the permissions on the folder to give you access but I'm more concerned that there is some underlying issue.
Can you open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions or are you running OSX 10.11 where it is a bit more complicated?

I'm running 10.11.5
Is it possible to address this particular issue first to see if it gets around my immediate problem?
