But seriously -- there is no single answer for this because it all depends on how the environments are configured -- ie, whether or not there is an Edge Transport server, or a 3rd-party mail filter, etc.

Here's a good visual of how it works -- the related services are listed there as well:

Now that should have been your question to begin with!

Why don't you just follow their documentation?

Problems using Powershell and Active Directory?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

Ok, you need to be clearer in your question if you want me to understand it.

But as I said originally, I cannot confirm how the mail flows if I don't know the full topology.  I can tell you for sure that all mail flows using SMTP, but it could also involve the transport service, the front end transport service, or the mailbox transport submission service.

Your question is way too vague to be able to provide an exact answer.

You are still being vague.

If you have two Exchange servers in the same org, then Exchange will send the email directly. The smart host is not used. It is sent from the mailbox to the hub transport role, then passed between the servers to the closest hub transport, before being delivered to the mailbox where the recipient is located.

That is it. The fact that it is two different versions of Exchange makes no difference - the flow hasn't changed since 2007.
