Try saving them as .xlsb files.

Try opening the same files on a different computer to see if this is related to the files themselves or to something with that specific computer.

My Excel usually freezes when
a) there file is quite large
b) there are external references
c) lots of match and lookup functions using external references.
d) there is a problem with any add in(s) you may have installed

...or your machine does not have enough memory to process your file(s) and their required calculations.

Excel files can live a long time, being upgraded from version to version and travel from one user to another user. Many times the user that have inherited the file don't know what's included in the file.
Problems with Excel files crashing or hanging can be caused by several things most of the time it is narrowed down to formatting and calculations. The following is a list of possible resolutions.
