SNMP Monitoring

Hello
We are using PRTG to monitor our switches, servers, storages etc.

Is it advisable to SNMP v1/2 or 3 ?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi

Depends on how you approach SNMP. Do you translate SNMP as "Security is not my problem" then you can use 1 or 2.
If there is some kind of security policy in place you should go for v3.

Cheers.
SNMP v1 and 2 are much easier to set up and use, but they send all information (including the "community strings", which are like passwords) in the clear!  SNMPv3 adds security to SNMP, so you're not sending everything in the clear.  However, its a lot harder to set up and configure.

And some older devices don't support v3, so you might not even have a choice for those.

Thanks Kimberly
We are using PRTG :) with 1000 sensors and planning now upgrade to 2500
Sounds good!  Let me know if you need any help with the upgrade or with SNMP!
While using the SNMP v1/2, if I restrict the allowed the on the the SNMP device then there shouldn't be any security issue ?
