How to trim photo along guide?

I have vertical and horizontal guides laid out. I need to trim a photo along the vertical guide but not do anything to the canvas. The canvas is larger than the photo, which is what I want. I will be printing out the photo and want this empty canvas space to print as well.

I'm familiar with using the marque tool > Image > Crop but that will crop the canvas. I just need to basically crop a layer. How is that done?

Once you have selected the portion that you want to retain, make sure that only the image layer is being edited, hit shift+ctrl+i to select the inverse of your selection and hit delete.

That's it! Good luck!
