I downloaded a Word file since it was formatted for the table of contents I needed, but it's expecting French.

All my English words are mis-spelled.

How do I change this?

In Word for Windows, you have to select the text (probably the whole document) that you want to set the spelling language for. Choose the language via the Review tab, Proofing group, Set Language button.

I hope Word 2011 is close enough for you to work it out.
