Hi All,

Can anyone here please share some steps or way to backup VMware ESXi 5.1 server setting ?
my VCenter and ESXi 5.1 license type is VMware vSphere 5 Essentials Plus

I need to upgrade it to ESXi 5.5 starting from the VCenter VM first which is quite easy to do.

Very easy to do.

Configuration of the ESXi host can be backed-up using the vSphere CLI you can download from here

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?downloadGroup=VCLI600&productId=491

Using the commands

vicfg-cfgbackup

or if you want a nice GUI, you can follow this Link

http://www.vladan.fr/free-esxi-configuration-backup-tool/

This will also backup the SQL Database from vCenter Server, if this is what you meant by "VMware Host".

Whoa, many thanks Andrew,

The VCenter is running as VM (same VM as the SQL server), so I can take clone for it before performing the upgrade.

Correct - CLONE - ALWAYS before upgrade.

Hi Andrew,

Quick clarification, if I need to rollback from failed ESXi 6.0u2 upgrade, How can I restore it back for the VI-cfg backup ?

No requirement at all to restore your config.

Just use Rollback Mode, at startup of the ESXi OS, and that will rollback to previous version of ESXi and Config, before the upgrade.
