Sending from an additional email alias in Office 365 using Outlook

How can I do the above without purchasing extra Office 365 mailboxes?

The idea would be to use another SMTP server to route the email but I am having trouble and keep getting errors.

Has anybody ever done this successfully?

The usual workarounds are to use a DG or shared mailbox for the additional alias and grant yourself Send As permissions. If you want to keep the alias on the same mailbox, you can either use a 3rd party tool or the IMAP/POP workaround (http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/config/how-to-create-a-fake-pop3-account/).
