Audacity, Windows Live Movie Maker, file formats conflict

I have captured an MP4 video and imported it to "any video converter" to change the format to wav which is being required by Audacity.
The final destination is Youtube. I've done this twice with no issues however I'm not remembering exactly the sequence or the file formats.

Audacity only allows importing of wav or aiff. No problem except WLMM does not accept wav or aiff. Never heard of aiff and would like to stick to basics on going from a Youtube video to an audio file that will be accepted by WLMM.

Here is what I get when trying to import an MP4 to Audacity. See image.

Paul told me I was not using Audacity correctly. I tried the other way and when playback the TV sound was heard so that method records all sounds it can pickup.

Here are the audio files supported by WLMM.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15289/windows-movie-maker-file-types

Audio files

Audio file types (format)      File name extensions
Windows Media Audio (WMA) files      .asf, .wm, and .wma
Pulse‑code Modulation (PCM) files      .aif, .aiff, and .wav
Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) files      .m4a
MP3 files      .mp3

I captured the video as an MP4. Audacity called it AAC.
Then converted to wav. and I see wav above "pulse code modulation."

If I import the file to Audacity it has to be wav and then converted back to wma,
If I use Audacity the other way where it records all sounds it picks up, then I could (??) capture the original video in some other format besides mp4.

Any comments as far as Audacity picking up all sounds. Other comments > ideas.

The 4 programs I used on the 2 files done 10 days ago was:
1. Youtube video downloaded.
2. Video cutter which works great if the file format is one it accepts. It accepted MP4 today.
3. Changed the format to wav to import to Audacity and then "exported" the audio after the audio was extracted from the video.
4. Windows Live Movie Maker and imported the audio and then a blank video or photo to create a file to be uploaded to YT which was 10 seconds audio and the video part was blank. Done this successfully two times.

Hoping for a simpler idea since all these programs have different format requirements which is something technology should fix which some world standard format for all devices, or close to all of them.

I tried that and it records sounds outside the computer. The TV sound. Is that the way it works?
Or that is "one" way it works if you want to record audio from a radio sitting next to the pc with Audacity open.

I did import a video on the first two. I had to use the setting "raw data." So it will accept a video.

On the third one I have the audio clip 10 seconds in a wav file by changing the video to wav to suit Audacity, and the audio was extracted from the 10 second "video" by using Audacity. WLMM won't take wav so I'll have to convert it to something else.

I wondered if there was an easier way to get a youtube video to be all audio so it can be cut to about 10-15 seconds and add a black and blank video or photo and create this for Youtube using WLMM.

Here are the other two and these were imported to Audacity to remove the audio and export the audio out.

I'm not recalling the sequence exactly and will use the programs in more efficient ways.

NO, I think you did not change the setting from Microphone (2- Camera) to Stereo Mix.

Please try again.

No Paul I did not change any settings.
Even on the cutter and converter there are windows that pop open and I do not change any settings no knowing what they are.
have you actually tried to record a video that is playing on your PC using Audacity with the settings that I recommended in order to eliminate any outside sounds (TV/Radio/etc)?

in Audacity, when you change the Microphone (2- Camera) setting to Stereo Mix, it records what is playing on the audio card (Realtek) rather than what is coming through the mic!
>>playing on your PC using Audacity

Of course I mean playing on your PC and using Audacity  to record the sound

I have successfully 3 times imported 10 second videos to Audacity if they are wav or aiff.
file > import audio or raw data > play > stop when the 10 seconds is over > file > export audio.

I will try your method instead.
>> I have successfully 3 times imported 10 second videos to Audacity if they are wav or aiff.

please let me repeat myself: wav and aif are NOT video formats, they are audio files.

it is NOT POSSIBLE IN ANY CASE to import a video file into Audacity.

From Audacity Wiki site:
<noexactmatch>

Displaying 0—0 of 0 matches for query ""import video"" retrieved in 0.052 sec with these stats:

If Audacity is an audio editor then maybe I can skip a step somewhere since I have been using a "cutter" to shorten the video or audio to a few seconds.

cutting an audio file is considered 'editing' the file. you can do this with Audacity.

thanks for the points
