When using Update manager to apply security updates to esxi 6 host, do I have to move the vms off of the host in order to do this?
I believe I do because the updates will place the host into maint mode correct?

Yes, since you will need to place your host in maintenance mode, you will have to migrate your virtual machines to another hosts on the cluster.
