I don't have a recommendation for a formal course but when I started working on my first android app I got a couple books, but I also found videos by slidenerd to be very helpful. Just go to youtube and enter 'slidenerd android'.

It was helpful for me because I knew what I wanted my app to do and I could usually find a video that explained how to implement it in android. His videos are good about explaining concepts and then showing how to implement them.

Hope this helps.

Yes, but PHP is not relevant, except as background noise.

I would look to Lynda.com, Udacity, Google training (free), Paul Hegarty's body of work (free, I think), and General Assembly.  All of these will expect a prerequisite: skills in Java or C++ or similar object-oriented languages.

Modev is worth joining.
