Can't get into phpMyAdmin after changing passwords

I changed some passwords on my server, for security reasons, and now I can't get into phpMyAdmin.

Error:  Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

Also, this directory is password protected via .htaccess.

Any ideas?

Turns out I had wrong permissions on the newly created /tmp dir:

chmod 777 /tmp

Solved the problem.

phpMyAdmin uses the user logins from MySQL.  If you changed the MySQL logins, then you have to use the new version in phpMyAdmin.

As I'm getting deeper into this, it looks like this may be my problem:

Missing /tmp/mysql.sock

hm. Almost, no cigar yet, because you just created a security issue..

The protection of /tmp should not be 777 but:  1777  (with ls -l a t should be visible in stead of the 3rd x)
This is to get the ownership of files inside consistent with the creator of the file...)
And the owner should be root, as well as the group like:

$ ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxrwt 24 root root 12288 21 aug 15:09 /tmp
