Outlook hangs when opening one instance of recurring appointment

This has only recently started happening, has anyone seen it, or (better) have a solution?

User creates a recurring appointment. Then opens it, selects to open "just this one", and Outlook hangs. Always.

This only happens with Outlook 2016 and Exchange 2013, not with any combination using Outlook 2013 or Exchange 2010. Safe mode, new profile, Outlook logging - none of them helps.

Thanks for writing. I'd seen a suggestion to use 32-bit, but that's what we have here.

And Outlook was updated in July (and it may have even been this update which caused the problem. Hm, wonder if we can try reverting to pre-July...

Couple more notes.
This is Online mode, not cached.
RPC/HTTP, not MAPI.
Forms cache has been emptied.
Hardware acceleration disabled.
And even those don't bring a result. A case has been opened at Microsoft now.

There's author feedback in the previous comment :). Am trying to get an update.
It seems the problem does not occur with a standard installation. They're now trying to narrow it down to the GPO setting or customisation responsible.
Hi grahame11. We have exactly the same problem and also opened a MS case, but no solution approach until now. Do you have a MS case number to share?
Hi, sorry, no SR number available to me. Will pass on any update as I get them (or not).
No solution known apparently, though I think it may be being escalated to the top support level. I will update this if I ever hear anything from the customer with the problem.
We just got a private fix from microsoft for this issue. They discovered an issue in the way the outlook clients communicates with exchange.
Outlook is waiting for an information and stops working, if outlook is freezed and you open outlook web app or outlook with the same user on another client and write something in your calender the freezed outlook starts working again...
