VMware VDIs with windows 10

Hi,

We are building a new environment for our users. We are deploying VMware Horizon 7 with floating windows 10 virtual desktops. These desktops will reset after each log off of users back to their original image.

What are some of the ways we can optimize the OS and users login to have a better experience. I read somewhere that someone was able to reduce the login time to 30 seconds. There are a few things we would like to accomplish.

- Users login under 30 seconds
- Google chrome be the default browers for all users
-Start Menu and taskbar same for all users
- Hide all default applications which Microsoft installs with windows 10 such as Xbox, Flipboard and others.

Thanks,

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

You should also make sure and use the Windows 10 LTSB version. It's not subject to the constant updates that MS wants to do and I believe that it comes with some of the things you want like a lot less of the preinstalled crapware.

We already have the full Windows 10 version and I believe we will be staying with that version.

The LTSB is a full version, it's just made more for situations like virtual machines and layering technologies. I played with the regular version, as you have installed, and it seems to work OK, but was advised that the LTSB versions are "better".

We won't be going with LTSB version as for the next 10 years that version will only get security and hotfixes but no new features.

I did run the VMware optimization tool and the login is still around 1 minute and 25 seconds. What else can I do to lower this?

The next question to ask is what are your resources?  You need to look at what hosts you are running this on as well as the storage. VDI is incredibly IO intensive on the storage. We had some speed issues initially with our deployment and when we switched to Pure Flash SSD storage, most of them just disappeared.

The VMware OS Optimization Tool is designed to Optimize the an OS suitable for VMware VDI.

Reducing login time, is based on a number of things.
