What are the major differences between the two? I know that Nexus runs at Core layer mainly. Is there  syntax command line difference? what are some well known nexus models?

Yes. IOS vs NX-OS.  Nexus is designed for data centers.
Well known are 5k, 6k, 7k series. List of all series - under "Cisco Nexus Switches Portfolio".
