What causes multible AVHDX files to be created for a Hyper-v VM

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server with 2 VM's - One of the VM's has about 60 AVHDX files created in the folder - What causes this?

Hyper-V Snapshots FAQ

Backup application that leave snapshots, or manual creation of snapshots!

Running VMs on Snapshots is not supported, and performance is poor.
