we had sql 2008 express on the physical vcenter server. the sql database maxed 10GB. we restored the backup of both databases to another machine in our environment hosting sql 2012- full version.

now I am getting in the event viewer an unknown error for the service basically saying it cant find configuration settings.

I changed the ODBC connection to point to correct server- this tested good. I also went into registry for VMware inc and changed the dbinstance to blank and the dbserver type to custom.

what do I need to do to get this working.

What is the exact error from Vcenter Server Service? there should be a KB in vmware explaining how to deal with the SQL Server dependency.

Please, attach the vpxd.log and did you upgrade the DSN to use the latest SQL Native Client ? If not, take a look here: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1015804

we were able to find out there were a billion event logs in the database which stemmed from incorrect credentials on vshield..from years and years. we cleaned these up and were able to clean the DB to a reasonable size. we are all good.

investigation of the root cause- we were able to solve and not have to move database.
