Orion Solarwinds

Anyone familiar with Solarwinds Orion.   Trying to set an alert for a monitor template to email a recipient when it reaches its threshold.  Client needs to be alerted when a particular folder reaches a capacity of 1000 files. I setup a file count monitor template. Set the theshold. I setup an Alert Monitor. "Hopefully I did it correctly" :( Because it serves no purpose because I can't link it to the File Count monitor template that I created.

When you set up the template, did you assign it to the machine you want to monitor? If so, that "monitor" (the SolarWinds term for a template assigned to a machine) will have it's own URL. If you go to the SAM summary page, you will see all of the assigned monitors listed on the left side, and can drill down until you find that one.

That will let you see how the monitor is doing - what kinds of statistics it's collecting.

You can also edit the monitor, and use the "test" button to see what value it's returning.

As far as the alert, you can certainly test the alert. I suggest the following process:
1) in the alert, add a criteria for JUST ONE machine (if you've assigned this to multiples. that way you avoid an alert storm.
2) change the threshold on the alert from >1000 to <1000
3) let it trigger
4) fix whatever needs to be fixed
5) use the "reset" option so it triggers again
6) wash, rinse, repeat

Once you have the alert working the way you want, remove the changes from 1 and 2.

Another trick is to add an alert action to write to a text file (that will be on the polling engine). It is faster than waiting for an email each time. You can also stuff that action with all sorts of extra fields that tell YOU what is going on even if you wouldn't put them in the actual email alert.

Just touching base on this so the question doesn't die on the vine. Any thoughts on this?
