Is it possible to interact with the backed SQL tables of Microsoft Dynamics AX in the cloud.

I think that should not be a problem as long as you have access/credential to connect to it. Here's an example for .NET apps connecting to Azure SQL DB in the cloud - btw which cloud solution your DB sits in - Azure, Amazon, etc?

For Azure cloud solution you'll need to "Obtain the connection string from the Azure portal" and follow the steps here:
