Windows 10 explorer.exe crashes when browsing network folders containing jpgs and trying to enable preview
Whenever I access a folder on a networkshare containing jpgs and try to change the view to thumbnails, explorer.exe crashes.
Tried this from many different PCs, all the same. If I copy the very same folder to a local folder liek teh desktop, the files can be previewed as thumbnails.
The fileserver is a Windows Server 2012 R2 which is installed as a guest on a W 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.

Windows 10 1607 is fresh installed, updates installed too, hardware drivers up to date. Tried this on 5 different computers. all the same.
I assume the physical network is OK, and since all machines are having the same issue, it must then be a server issue. No problem for me with Windows 10.
What Antivirus do you have? Some AV products have issues with Windows 10.
It is not likely firewall (that would not cause Windows to crash).

Network is working in general, tried without any AV, too.

latest test was with Windows 10 1607 64Bit fresh install without any extra software installed
Can you share a drive on a different computer and then test. Does Windows 10 still crash?
ASKER
It works if the share is on another Windows 10 computer. but I just copied that one folder.
If I copy that one folder to the same server but not in 5 subdirectories it works from that server, too.

the path is longer than 128 characters
ASKER
if I use the UNC-path it works. could it be a path that is too long?!

System File Checker:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator and run SFC /SCANNOW.
Allow to complete, restart or, preferably, shut down the computer and then start up again.
Test to see if the problem has been corrected.
DISM:
Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth (takes 15 - 20 minutes).
Restart the computer and test
If neither of these work, do a Repair Install from the Media Creation Link

Click on Upgrade to Windows 10 (even if Windows 10 is running), click on the Download button, select Open (Run) but NOT Save. Allow the program to run. Allow drivers to update. Then select Keep Everything.
