Windows SBS2011 Backup

I have a SBS2011 with a dynamic disk where data is being saved. It was mirrored, but the mirror is broken now, and don't think it will be reestablish again.

I want to test my backup, which is being done on an external hard disk drive. The backup is done with the trusty Windows Backup, using Magikmon that will supply me with reports that the backup was successful or errors. It is close to 700GB of data, and not incremental. As a test, I would like to restore this in a different server in a testing environment.

Once the drive is plugged in, Windows Backup/Restore does see the backup for the server, catalogue around 5 minutes, and then "Unable to browse the New Volume (D:). The mounted backup is inaccessible. Please retry the operation"

So how will you recover this? I select files and folders to recover. Should I rather recover the whole volume? If that is the case, will I be able to read info  the dynamic disk? I see there are 3rd party software that you can buy, that might do the trick. But surely if you lose the drive/server, you would like to plug in your drive and hit the recovery button and you sorted out. Without jumping through 10 hoops.

If using the native SBS / Windows Server Backup, the backup files themselves are VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) files which can be mounted natively in any version of Windows since Windows 7, individual files / folders can be manipulated outside of the SBS environment.

You should be able to restore the complete backup to, for instance, a laptop if you wanted to, as long as you had the available disk space.  I remember having to edit the registry from the Backup in the SBS recovery environment in order to get past a RAID issue (the Server used RAID, the laptop I restored to obviously didn't).  Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate the documentation on that process yet...

If the worst came to the worst, you could export mail to PST from Client PC's and you have the flat data in the VHD backup files.

I'll look for the documentation I made and let you know...

If your backup and data is really important for you then I recommend you using third party backup tool for this purpose. Because Windows Server Backup is a real PITA. Once it works then it fails. And you never know when exactly it will fail.
Microsoft does not let often updates out for this feature so it is not prio 1 in their developments.
Symantec, Shadow Protect, Paragon, Acronis - there are a lot of tools which work way better than WSB.
I found the documentation I was looking for finally, my apologies for taking so long.

You should do a full Bare Metal Recovery of your SBS as it is that you will need to rely on if the Server fails as the easiest way (I believe) of restoring your AD.

After the full restore is complete and the Server reboots you will likely receive an error each and every time.

To get around this you'll need to boot the Server from the SBS media to access the Repair / Restore functionality.

  1. From the Recovery Console, fire up Regedit
  2. Goto File -> Load Hive (Note: Must be under HKLM first, or this option will be greyed out).
  3. Navigate to <drive>:\Windows\System32\Config\SYSTEM (The newly restored System Drive).
  4. Load hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (which mounts as a sub-hive).
  5. Locat the keys under .../ControlSet001/Services.
  6. Change Intelide/Start from 3 to 0.
  7. Change Pcide/Start from 0 to 3.
  8. Select File, Unload Hive (may need to select the hive node in HKLM).
  9. Reboot the Server.
