Windows 7 Update Process Not Working

I formatted a customers Dell laptop and reloaded Windows 7 - 64 bit; loaded the network drivers and other hardware drivers from Dell and everything works except the Windows Update - it just says Checking for Updates but never does anything.  I have looked at other answers on Google and have tried most of them - removed files in the SoftwareDistribution folder; did a sfc /scannow; ran a virus scan; did a msconfig - hid all the Microsoft services and then disabled the rest - everything has not worked - any thoughts on what I should do next?

The first thing is to make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed.  You won't get any updates without that.  After that, it can take 4 to 24 hours for the update process to work.  There are some other updates that can shorten the process some.  I don't have the links but some others will probably post them for you.

Once SP1 is installed, go the following two Microsoft links and installed the two updates.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104
and
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

KB3102810 may have been installed July or August Patch Tuesday, but DO install KB949104

Run Windows Updates and restart at the end.
