Windows 7 Updates never completes

When I run Windows updates on my Windows 7 workstation after a re-install and just runs with never completing. I updated my IE and Windows Update installer to the latest version but no change. When I try to do it over the internet it tells me I need to do it through control panel. What else can I try?

Let me try these and post back. Thanks
I tried your suggestions but there was no change. I let updates run for two days and it just ran and ran.
Don't let Windows Update run.   Just set it to "Automatic" (either "Install updates automatically" or to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them")  and then leave the machine on ... being sure the power settings are set so it won't go to sleep.    Then wait a day or two and it should work.

One other thing => change the settings so it does NOT do updates for "other Microsoft software".
